the_lavery_project2.jpgThe Lavery Family project was our first official corporate CETA project. This involved the retrofit of a single storey detached house located on MacDonald Avenue in Hamilton, Ontario. This 700 square foot bungalow is home to Errict and Alex Lavery, their mother Jennifer, and her husband Iain Kirkpatrick.

About five years ago, the two boys were diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a degenerative disease that progressively weakens all the muscles in the body including the heart. DMD has greatly hindered their mobility and independence, as they now both require wheelchairs to get around.

Kenaidan Contracting Ltd. became involved after learning about the brothers. Our mission was to help this young family with the tremendous expense of retrofitting and adapting their home to accommodate the mobility challenges faced by Errict and Alex.

Kenaidan committed to managing the construction process for the family, and to getting other companies to support this project. After our efforts, we received sponsorships and donations from over 60 companies who were dedicated to this special project.

The home makeover included enlarging narrow doorways and the addition of many other elements such as a wheel-in shower, a kitchen breakfast bar that the wheelchairs could fit under, a wheelchair ramp at the back deck, a special wheelchair lift at the front on the house, and so much more.

The project began the first week of August back in 2010 and was completed by October 7th, the day of the grand unveiling and welcome home celebration. More than 100 people, consisting of family members and 80+ volunteers, gathered on the street to welcome the Lavery family back home.

"You have no idea how you changed our lives," their tearful mother Jennifer told the gathering. "I just can't say enough about how much we appreciate everything you have done."

During the unveiling ceremony, Aidan Flatley, President and CEO of Kenaidan, proudly stated that this has become a Community Cares Enough To Act Project, and extended his heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all of the subcontractors, sponsors, neighbours and families who helped create a miracle.
