Her parents are both former Olympians, so it's no surprise that Jessica would end up following in their footsteps. Her mother, Kathy Gregg, competed as a long-track speed skater in both the 1976 and 1980 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck and Lake Placid. Her father, Randy Gregg, a former Edmonton Oilers defenceman, was on Canada's men's hockey team in Lake Placid and Calgary. Originally from Edmonton, Jessica moved to Calgary at age 17 to continue her training. Her rigorous training schedule is completed twice a day, six days a week. Her training consists of a morning workout for 4½ hours and 5 hours in the afternoon, including 2 hours of weight training. With so much of her time dedicated to training and competition, this gives her little time to focus on school; she currently studies kinesiology at the University of Calgary. Jessica said she was "very excited" when the announcement was made that the 2010 Olympics were going to be held in Vancouver. "I started to dream about competing in Canada at my very first Olympic Games. Being in Vancouver in front of a Canadian crowd, that would really be special." As a member of the short-track speed skating team, Jessica competed in the Ladies' 500 m and 1000 m individual races. She also joined the women's relay team and it was at the 3000 m Relay Finals where the team skated their way to a silver medal in Vancouver. Even as a young girl, Jessica Gregg dreamed of going to the Olympics. At age five, she skated around her backyard ice rink wearing her first pair of speed skates that belonged to her mother. Now at age 22, Jessica has realized that lifelong dream and is an Olympic silver medalist.
